About
La Pescheria has operated on the same site behind Catania's Piazza del Duomo for at least five centuries, one of the few corners of the old city to survive the 1693 earthquake that flattened most of the rest. Fishmongers set up before dawn around Piazza Alonzo di Benedetto, next to the Amenano fountain that was built partly to help wash the market clean, calling out prices over crates of swordfish, tuna, sea urchins and shellfish. It remains a working fish market rather than a tourist stall row, though a handful of counters now serve raw seafood and fried fish to eat on the spot.
