Kirkor has been serving bougatsa on Lion Square, in the heart of Heraklion, since the 1920s. The custard-filled version, dusted with sugar and cinnamon, is the house specialty, alongside cheese and savoury versions and loukoumades (honey-soaked dough puffs). Sitting at one of its outdoor tables facing the Venetian-era Morosini Fountain is a long-running local morning ritual, and the shop remains a fixture for residents returning to the city as much as for visitors passing through the square.
