Heraklion Central Market (1866 Street)

Running along 1866 Street between Lion Square and Kornarou Square in Heraklion's old town, this is Crete's busiest working market. Butchers, fishmongers, cheese shops and spice stalls line the narrow street, alongside vendors selling thyme honey, raki and dried herbs. Small tavernas tucked between the shops serve fresh-caught fish and Cretan dishes to market workers and locals, making it one of the best places in the city to eat alongside the people who run it, rather than for tourists.
