Fushimi Inari Approach Food Stalls

Along the approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha, the shrine at the base of Kyoto's famous thousand-torii trail, a row of stalls and old shops sells the food tied to the shrine's fox messengers, said to favour fried tofu. Inari sushi, rice wrapped in seasoned fried tofu pouches and sometimes worked with sesame or hemp seed, is the local specialty, served at shops such as Nezameya, which dates to 1540, alongside kitsune udon and street snacks like grilled skewers and shaved ice. It is one of the oldest continuously trading food streets in Kyoto, tied directly to the shrine above it.
